Iran-US tensions: Explosions rock Qatar's capital Doha after airspace closed; embassies urge citizens to shelter in place
Doha was shaken Monday night by a series of loud explosions, with AFP journalists reporting blasts audible across central Doha and Lusail, just hours after Qatar closed its airspace citing "regional developments" following US strikes on Iran.Witnesses reported seeing projectiles streaking across the night sky. While the exact nature of the explosions remains unclear, the incident comes amid growing fears of escalation after Iran vowed retaliation for recent US airstrikes on its nuclear facilities.Qatar's foreign ministry said air traffic had been temporarily suspended as a "precautionary measure" and that authorities were closely monitoring the situation with international partners. The US embassy in Doha warned its citizens to shelter in place, with similar advisories issued by British and Canadian missions. “Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend American citizens shelter in place until further notice,” the US embassy said on its website.Despite the visible tension, Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said embassy advisories “do not necessarily reflect the existence of specific or credible threats,” adding that the security situation remains stable and that Qatar is pursuing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions.Qatar, which hosts the largest US military base in the region at Al Udeid, lies just 190 kilometers south of Iran across the Gulf and has found itself in a precarious position amid the Israel-Iran conflict.Iran’s armed forces on Monday warned of “serious, unpredictable consequences” for the US after its direct involvement in strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The US Fifth Fleet in nearby Bahrain has also shifted some embassy staff to remote work.Tensions have surged in the region following Israel’s initial strike on Iran on June 13, and the US State Department has since advised Americans worldwide to exercise increased caution.
