The Oklahoma City Thunder’s long-awaited championship celebration came with a slightly humorous hiccup. After clinching their first NBA title since relocating from Seattle, the Thunder found themselves struggling with something far from basketball: popping champagne bottles. Their awkward celebration went viral, and Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander didn’t shy away from the moment, acknowledging on Good Morning America that they need some serious off-court practice. Despite the bubbly blunder, the victory itself was historic and rightfully earned.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander jokes about the OKC Thunder’s awkward champagne-popping celebration

Fresh off a 103–91 win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder ended a 17-year title drought and captured their first championship since their Seattle SuperSonics days in 1979. While the city of Oklahoma erupted in celebration, the locker room scene painted a different picture. It was full of smiles, laughter, and some less-than-smooth champagne-popping attempts.Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the heart and soul of the Thunder, couldn’t help but laugh at their postgame antics during his GMA appearance. “We got to work on that,” the Canadian NBA star candidly admitted. However, they certainly had fun.

“Yeah, absolutely. I think that's what's made us a really good group and a really good basketball team is like above all like above all the pressure and the moment and the stage and the excitement around the NBA. We just have fun playing with each other and we enjoy each other's success, and because of that, we're out there. We're selfless and we get the best version of ourselves and each other, and uh the sky's the limit when you play like that and work like that together as a team,” Gilgeous-Alexander shared.

While the fun is undeniable, the path to the championship wasn’t easy. The Thunder stormed through the playoffs, dominating the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals and then outlasting the Pacers in a dramatic seven-game series. The title run was made even more symbolic by Shai’s historic performance. He averaged 30.3 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.6 rebounds in the Finals and put up 29 points with 12 assists in the clincher. That effort earned him not just Finals MVP but also put him in elite company. The 26-year-old joined the likes of LeBron James, Tim Duncan, and Shaquille O’Neal as one of only eleven players in history to win both the regular season and Finals MVP. He also captured the Western Conference Finals MVP and the league’s scoring title; it was a sweep of honors not seen since Shaq in 2000.After the final buzzer, an emotional Gilgeous-Alexander reflected on the journey, “It doesn’t feel real,” he said. “So many hours. So many moments. So many emotions. So many nights of disbelief. So many nights of belief. It’s crazy to know that we’re all here, but this group worked for it. This group put in the hours, and we deserve this.”Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault echoed the sentiment, calling his players an “uncommon team.”“They behave like champions. They compete like champions,” he said postgame. “They root for each other’s success, which is rare in professional sports. I’ve said it many times, and now I’m going to say it one more time. They are an uncommon team, and now they’re champions.”Also Read: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander follows Michael Jordan and Tim Duncan with rare double MVP achievement in 2025Regardless, the Thunder now have the motivation to come back even stronger to dream of another championship run next season. But for now, they are going to have an offseason break, and they deserve it after dominating the 2024-25 season throughout.
